What is an EA?

EA stands for “Enrolled Agent”. It is an  elite status and the highest credential awarded by the IRS. Enrolled agents have unlimited practice rights before the IRS, just like CPAs and attorneys.

Online s corporation and partnership tax preparation – how it works

It’s quite easy to go through the entire process.

First, contact us for a quote and read our terms of engagement. If you decide that you would like to move forward with us, just let us know and we will request the items we will need to proceed.

The next step is to securely upload the data that we will need to prepare your taxes.

Please note that for big jobs and with new clients, we charge a retainer of half of the preparation fee estimate to begin the work. This is fully creditable toward the total fee.

Once we have your data, we will work on your tax return, ask some (mostly simple) questions, and see if you have any questions or specific concerns. We may ask you to clarify things that look odd to us.

When your taxes are ready for your review, you can view them securely and confirm that they look ready to file. If so, we will send for your electronic signature. You click to sign, we will bill you for the remaining balance of our fee, we e-file, and we are done.

Usually, we follow up with a bit of tax advice. This is especially true with s corporations, as many s corp owners do not fully understand them. We also talk about estimated taxes, tax planning, and we can even offer a bit of business coaching, if requested.

Tax advice is not technically included with the tax preparation services, but we care for each of our clients and to keep you coming back, we like to make sure you are taken care of. We are willing to provide a reasonable amount of time to make sure that our clients understand their tax situations.

Here’s more about the data we will need

First we’ll need a secure upload of your most previously filed s corporation or partnership tax return. This helps greatly with data entry and for accuracy.

We will also need some very basic information about the partners or shareholders. This includes data like names, addresses, tax identification numbers, and “share” of the business. Much of this is on the previous year’s tax return, unless something has changed for the current year.

The tough part is that we will need a P&L (profit and loss) report.

You can’t just hand us raw data like stacks of invoices, bank statements, or journals of expenses. The activity must be categorized.

Actually, you can give us just statements, but you must engage with us for bookkeeping services and we charge additionally for the work. Bookkeeping services are not included in our tax preparation fees.

The profit and loss report you provide to us does not have to be fancy, but it must contain a categorized list of the income and expenses of the business for the tax year.

A P&L is not so difficult to create, but it can be time consuming to go through all of the companies expenses for the year prepare an accurate one.

It would help with the accuracy of your tax preparation if you also provide the IRS FEIN letter, articles of organization, an operating agreement, (as applicable) and the s corporation election form 2553 (as applicable). We can proceed without them if necessary, but filing accuracy may be diminished.
